The Freman culture is driven by ideas of ecology, efficiency and waste reduction. This time I was impressed with everything: the intelligence of the writing, the details of the world and the intricate nature of the storytelling. This is a difficult one, but it’s worth it. Though I think that was more to do with my immaturity as a reader at the time than anything else. It wasn’t the complexity of the world and politics, but the narration style which totally perplexed and frustrated me. So, I read it again six years on and this is something I said I would never do because I found it so difficult to read the first time. Alia believes that by obtaining the secrets of the twins’ prophetic visions, she can maintain control over her dynasty.īut Leto and Ghanima have their own plans for their visions-and their destinies….I was totally blown away by the recent movie version of this, that much so I decided to revisit and revaluate my opinion of this extraordinary book. The displaced House Corrino is plotting to regain the throne while the fanatical Fremen are being provoked into open revolt by the enigmatic figure known only as The Preacher.

Like their father, the twins possess supernormal abilities-making them valuable to their manipulative aunt Alia, who rules the Empire in the name of House Atreides.įacing treason and rebellion on two fronts, Alia’s rule is not absolute.

The Children of Dune are twin siblings Leto and Ghanima Atreides, whose father, the Emperor Paul Muad’Dib, disappeared in the desert wastelands of Arrakis nine years ago.
